Thanks for all the advice on this, very helpful indeed. I also just discovered that my next door neighbour has a trident maple in their front yard, and they have allowed me to take as many cuttings as I like in spring!! Bargain.
So the Redwood turns to the Bonsai and says "Lend me a Tenner"......

Good luck with cuttings. I find trident maples difficult from cuttings. seed much quicker and easier.

If possible, please ask to do air-layerings too. It is better than cuttings.

I have to agree with you on cuttings. Over the years, I have about 30 cuttings survived out of hundreds that I had done -- they were tooth-pick size cuttings.
