Re: growing pine from cuttings???
I only have experience with Radiatas, which take easily via cuttings. Cut them up, dip in hormone, plant in sand. 'Bout it.

Regards, Mitchell.

I posted a similar question on another forum a few years back, rather than re-write the wheel (pardon the pun), here is a link the the response. I haven't tried it but I hope it helps.

Re: growing pine from cuttings???
Hi and yes it can be done.
Best results occur from material taken from autumn candles.
Remove all spring growth in early summer; it will bud back and put out new candles and the resulting growth gives the best cutting materials. (This new growth is compact and not over vigorous)
I have had it work with corky type Black pines.
Give it a go.

Re: growing pine from cuttings???
Sounds like a great plan Grant. When you say take from Autumn Candles. I guess you mean plant them then. I have seen graft stored in the fridge till spring for grafting which seems a little too technical for me. Also one other system with deciduous hardwood cuttings is to bury the whole cutting in the ground over Winter and planting out come spring.
I did hear the main problem with pine cuttings was keeping them alive long enough (6 months) before they shot new roots. That meant misting was very important. I guess a proper misting set up/system always improves the chances but is this necessary with Pines?

It's too bad your in such a hurry cause the stories I could tell you, Bushels and baskets of stories, hole crates full of stories. But if you can spare a moment I will tell you one story.

Take the cuttings when you intend to use them. Why would you cut off then store?
Safer to leave them on the tree till you want the cuttings.

Not sure Grant. I believe that is how Brent waltson does it. I gatherd there was something about Autumn candles responding better with spring growth when grafting. It was all a little suprising to me but he is one of Americas great bonsai nurserymen so I thought there might be something to it?

We are talking cuttings; not grafting.

Re: growing pine from cuttings???
Quite good results here from Black, Red, Mugo, White pines and radiata is said to be easy. Make cuttings of previous seasons shoots as indicated by Grant. Treat base with rooting substance (I use rootex G or Clonex red or purple). My mix is 2 perlite: 1 coir peat. Placed under intermittent mist until roots form. I was told August is the only month to set black pine cuttings but I'm trying other seasons to verify/ disprove this. Will be keen to hear results from Dumper's summer cuttings (maybe PM me when you know one way or the other Dumper?).

Re: growing pine from cuttings???
I haven't tried any pine candle cuttings but have done newly sprouted seedling cuttings of radiata and they seem to work great!
I also wanted to say how awesome it is to have all these great Nurserymen from around Australia giving their input. Thanks Neil, Grant, and Lindsay we really value your input.
Scott.

there is no correct way. There are many ways. What works one year doesn't the next. keep an open mind or you will not evolve
