8th National Exhibition of Aust Native Plants as Bonsai

This year's exhibition will be held again at the Australian National Botanic Gardens (ANBG) in Canberra, on the weekend of March 19 and 20, to showcase Australian native trees styled as bonsai.

Bonsai enthusiasts from around Australia are encouraged to visit the exhibition and to enter a tree if possible. There is also a photo competition for those that would like to take part but cannot manage the logistics of getting a tree to Canberra. Informal tree judging is done by visitors to the exhibition who nominate their favourite tree. In the case of the photo's - the judging is by the volunteers who organise and run the exhibition - a sort of 'packers award'.

Also this year, in conjunction with the exhibition - and held at the ANBG, there will be a Symposium on the subject of "styling inspired by Australian native trees'. This will involve a number of activities including workshops, a Q and A session with a number of experienced bonsai artists who are growing Australian natives as bonsai, a presentation on Leptospermum's as bonsai - and a BBQ.

Although I do not have any Natives quite up to show level, I will definitely be there for the exhibition, and Symposium.

Two very good reasons for a visit to Canberra on 19-20 March. Plus, it'd be lovely to see the national bonsai and penjing exhibition again...............

Hi again everyone ...

Just floating this post to the surface as I chose a time to advertise this years event that was a bit close to the Christmas/New Year holiday period and many of you may have missed it - or if you did see it, weren't focussing on things happenning in March. As well as the exhibition this year there is a symposium on the theme of styling Australian Native bonsai - involving discussion, presentations and workshops - and a sausage sizzle. Attending the exhibition or registering for the symposium activities is a great way to learn new things, share your knowledge and meet members of the Ausbonsai and Australian native bonsai growing communiy face-to-face.

Mike B how do we go about letting you have photographs for this show, as you say logistics. I know how long it took Grant, to get trees from here, and weaint getting them back

Bad luck about that one way journey - for you anyway. Good for us who get to see the Collection regularly ...

Photo's are easy ... Just send a file to secretary@cbs.org.au. We plan to exhibit them using a digital projector so a file size of between 500Kb to 1Mb would be necessary - closer to 1 Mb would be best. JPG format is fine.

Can you also provide:

1 - Scientific name
2 - Common name
3 - Number of years in training (the tree that is)
4 - Brief story about the tree - 50 to 100 words. (How or when you came by it, its life story, any stying challenges you faced, a point of interest about it etc.). We use this in a catalogue.

After the Exhibition, we make pictures of all the trees displayed available through the Aust National Botanic Gardens website. Great way to make the art available for viewing by the broader public - and to preserve it for many years to come. We also ask that exhibitors confirm that they are happy for this use of their photo's.

Easy really ...

Hi again ...

Only about 6 weeks to go if you were planning to get involved in the Exhibition or Symposium this year.

We are keen to provide an event for the public and for bonsai artists, that showcases bonsai using Australian native species - drawing from artists around Australia. As well as the bonsai exhibition, this year, through a symposium, we are bringing together bonsai artists to share their experience and thinking with regard to styling Australian native bonsai. Among the key players at the Exhibition and Symposium will be Roger Hnatiuk, Group Leader of the Australian Plants as Bonsai Study Group, Grant Bowie from the NBPCA, Will Fletcher from Island Bonsai in Tasmania, Neil Padbury from Shibui Bonsai Nursery and Leigh Taafe from Ledanta Bonsai Nursery.

It seems the format for this show has changed from Rogers original concept. From what I can see I will have to register for the symposium to enter 1 tree.

So this year, unfortunately will be the first time I am unable to enter a tree or three since this shows inception.

No, I think that's a misunderstanding, but I have to admit that things are not set out very clearly. Anyway I have written to Mike to ask for elucidation.

Hi Peter/Lisa and others who may be a bit confused by the change in the show format.

The Exhibition will run as it normally has - drawing on tree entries from as far and wide as possible/practical - with a number of local entries. There is no fee for this. This year we want to show bonsai enthusiasts and the public in general, as much as we can and so are having a photo exhibition as well - projecting digital images of trees that could not 'make it in person' to Canberra.

In addition to the Exhibition - and running at the same location (ANBG) and time - is the Symposium based on the theme of 'Styling inspired by Australian Native Trees'. This is the element for which there is a $30 registration fee and provides a number of activities - a Q and A session, a presentation on Leptospermum as bonsai, a guided walk in the Gardens to explore the styling theme - and of course - free entry to the Exhibition and associated public demos each day at 2pm.

There are also workshops being run as a part of the Symposium - for which there is an additional $15 particpant and $5 observer, fee.

Hope this clears it up (ie NO FEE TO EXHIBIT) as we would be really pleased for you to continue to exhibit your trees.

I noticed that to get a registration form for entering trees you apply directly to secretary@cbs.org.au or in other words Mike. There are no specifications regarding the nr of entries you can submit.
