i collected this privet about a yr ago on a collecting trip with a member and now friend from bonsaitalk and have been planning on styling it as a windswept for a while now. after seeing peters tree i was inspired to give this one its transition to potential bonsai. sorry about the pics they were taken on my mobile as my digi cams in the shop getting fixed

Looking very believable Jarryd, thinning and jinning the two branch stumps would help in my mind.

Nice start Jarryd. Get those lower branches to look more wind affected as well. Well done. Have you got either Robert Steven's book or Deborah Koreshoff's book?

i will probably keep those lower stumps as they actually naturally their from collection and are holllow and very visually pleasing, i love naturalisic trees, so im a sucker for stuff like that and feel it adds character to the tree. you guys will understand when i post up new pictures when my camera is fixed. peter i dont have either of these books or really any for that matter as im 18 and pretty broke however i have done a workshop with robert stevens once before and seen him demo at aabc :D . being broke is one of the reasons i have majority collected material or general nursery trees but i guess i have learned to style trees from scratch and am surprised by some of the nice quality stock i have found at the older nurseries around locally. i will do some research on windswept trees and try and get those bottom braches a bit more pleasing. i have a nice stone slab i found in a creak bed that i drilled some holes into that i might pot it onto in spring

thanks for your help guys

Go to my recent thread on windswept celtis and you will see a pdf file i have attached there from Roberts book. He explains the style very well. If you have a birthday or something coming up, drop some hints for Deborah Koreshoff's book mate. Its a bible, compulsory book. She explains in her book the reasons why tres grow like they do, for example, you may see the main trunk of a tree growing into the wind but all branches growing in the same direction as the wind. This is due to th cell growth of the tree, the cells on the windward side will grow smaller then the cells on the protected side causing this tension and direction of growth. Great book Jarryd.
