Japanese Black Pine Pine Cones

Hi Everyone,

I have a JBP currently growing in a big plastic pot. It has several small pine cones developing on it at the moment, and right now, they are about 6 to 8 mm across. The tree is about 50 cms high and about 3 to 4cms thick at the base. What I would like to know is whether these cones will develop (I see no reason why they wouldn’t), how long it will take, and how big they will end up. All I have to do now is decide whether to paint the nursery blue or pink!

Hi andrew, i'm not totally sure, someone else can hoefullt verify this, but i was told or read somewhere once that blackpine cones mature in their second year on the tree They will mature i had them on my blackpine when i first got it.. I the same as you have cones forming on 2 pines this year....p.s- they will only be quite small, not sure if the seed will be viable? Craig

Hi Andrew,

I am sorry to say, but do not hold high expectations for them... I have a big black pine on the ground in July 2007, since then, it had put out two crops, the cones developed to about 3-4 cm long then sort of died off.

I did cull off all the weak cones, and left only a few strongest ones -- still to no avail. And the tree is in good health.

Having said that, there is no reason why you should not have more luck than I.

I had 2 of my pines grow them last year and I left them on the tree to no ill effect.
I did not even think about seeds in them, but just thought they looked really cool

This year have another crop growing as well
