Janet Selby has been studying ceramics for more than 20 years, Zen meditation for 15 years and the art of Bonsai for 5 years. She will be putting it all together for a practical workshop outlining Bonsai styles, the meaning or their containers, and how to choose an appropriate container - all with the appreciation of Japanese aesthetics of wabi sabi.
As well as outlining the basics of bonsai containers and the process of selecting the appropriate pot, we will be analyzing the components that make a successful form.
We begin our introduction to the medium of clay as if we have never encountered it before, known as "Beginners Mind" in Zen circles. After this exploration, we will be making our own containers:

• a slab construction semi-cascade pot, and
• a free form rock style container.

Participants will have the chance to put their individual feel to the work, and if they have their own preconceived idea for a piece this will be a good opportunity to approach it.

Firings can be organised with Macquarie Hills Potters for a fee.
