Pruning trident maples

Post by shibui »

Now that the leaves have gone and i can see the branch structure it is time to start winter pruning Here are a few before and afters. Many of these trees have developed to the point where branches need thinning as well as shortening back. Just an overview with these pics. Maybe some more detailed pics of the process later.

Hi Shibui :D

when you get a chance could you explain to us the process of how you decide where to prune back to for winter pruning. i beleive it is a simple process that just needs a little thought and some care to it but i also beleive it can be something not understood by many.

thanks :D

Yes some basic pruning advice would be appreciated. I would love to know how to select branches not needed - still a big mystery to me.

The first thing I look for in my winter pruning is the number of growths from each point on the branch, So I am always pruning back to 2 growths at any one point right out to the twigs. Then I wire and prune for direction so the main branch, sub-branches and twigs are all flowing together. I try to eliminate that fish skeleton look where the sub branches are at right angles to the main branch. Then go over the twigs and shorten back to the short internodes, while I am doing that I check the twigs again for multiple growths from one point. Also take off or wire growth heading straight up or straight down.
My winter pruning is usually done in conjunction with twig wiring. The wire is removed with the first summer defoliation
It makes life much easier if you get on to this detailed work while the branch structure is still young and pliable. It gets more complex and not easier as the trees age and the ramification becomes more dense. This weekend I spent 6 hours pruning and wiring a palmatum group. First one for the season done.

It was beyond drooling! Shibui, I would be happy to bring the lights, backdrops and photo gear up and shoot the tree for the Ausbonsai faithful, just say the word and I'm there.
