Baeckea Virgata (Babingtonia) - New trees

Post by kcpoole »

Hi all

There is a nursery near me that is closing down, I assume to be redeveloped into Units or town houses.
I called in yesterday to see what they had which was not much, but they had a few Baeckeas at 1/2 price.
I have not got any, so figured I cannot leave them there at $7 each :D

They are in 8" pots and Quite leggy. I reckon at least 1 will go in the ground to grow some more quickly.

Any suggestions gladly accepted

I will attack at least one later today and see what I can do but Nat has a Mudlark Pot waiting for a tree so it might end up there for her :-)

Ken

G'day Ken, good score. They flower, they bud back and respond to a good pruning. Babingtonia make good specimens. You have three, why not a group planting so they form one canopy. That looks good when they flower.

Hi all,

I am in WA for a few days and today I will be visiting someone who does the most amazing things with Baekea (or Babbingtonia as they are now called).

They flower, they take pruning well and according to my source here he fertilizes significantly all year round.

You will see this person if you come to the AABC Convention in WA next year.

I have a couple of Baeckea and have been confused about them being referred to as Babbingtonia - obviously they have been renamed ? Can anyone tell me how recent the name change was ?
Regards Tony

Hi Ken,

I have a couple of Baeckeas and they will take heavy pruning and back bud prolifically. The local possum mafia love the flowers and will quite happily chomp off a whole branch for a main course and finish up with crabapple soufflé for dessert. I am going to try a home made chilli spray come spring which may have an effect.
