Redwood from the ashes

Post by alpineart »

This is a collected California Redwood , Coast Redwood "Sequoia Sempervirens" that i salvage from the bush fires in N.E Victoria in 2008 .Originally the young tree would have been around 4-5 metres in height , self sown and was burnt to the ground . The thick bark saved the base and from that it suckered up with multiple trunks .

The middle pic shows the trunk with a split pot around the base to encourage new roots higher up the trunk .I decided i had better get into some serious training of the stock i have this is the result of my effort . its first initial chop , hack and wire job ,

I considered multi trunks however with thick foliage to come i decided on a twin trunk so the stump could be seen as part of the overall design . it will settle for a short period then be carved and potted into a bonsai pot . Cheers Alpineart

Nice work man!! I really like some redwoods I've seen, and would be interested in getting some of my own one day.
I like where this is heading!! Good luck with it :D

Some pics of the redwood seedling planted into Bonsai pots and trays for future landscapes .Grown in a green house 70% shade over Summer sitting on a wet bed , they were about 100-200mm high when planted now they are a healthy 500-600mm plus

100_5105.jpg
.They will make a good start to a large group forest about 1metre long .Cheers

Hi Bodhi , just dropping leaves now , contemplating using Debs methods on the base to see if its got the juice to sprout some roots .Might use big bamboo skewers  Its a bit big to repot and root prune so i will give it a go , It will work or not .Come winter i may slice the box down and have a bo-peep . Plenty of suckers continued come up so things are still happening underground .I will post an update soon .Cheers
