Ficus PJ or MB?

Post by Glenda »

I have some figs I bought as Port Jacksons, and some bought as Moreton Bay figs. As seedlings they looked different, but now as they are growing I find it difficult to tell them apart. Do they normally look similar, or have they been mislabelled? If they are similar, how do I tell them apart?

PJ Fig can have a rusty, red, furry back of leaf but not necessarilly. Those without the red back usually grow more vigorously IMHO.

Very easy to tell the difference. the Moreton Bay leaf is huge if left to grow and the petiole is reddish. As compared to the Port Jackson which is smaller and has a white petiole.

Sorry, i went out and checked and need to make a correction. The M.B petiole has a reddish tinge and has huge dark green leaves when new leaves come out they are reddish before they unfold. T.he P.J petiole is light green
