Mexican Crabapple

A mate of mine has a tree that he calls a "Mexican Crabapple" anyone ever heard of them?

never heard of them before mate, not even a google search picks them up either???

No, no mistake. I googled it the other day and couldn't find a thing either.

Any clues anyone?

I dont think thats called a Mexican Crabapple,Leigh. Thats a "Mexican Hawthorn", the fruits are called "Tejocotes" and resemble little apples. You can google it up and check for yourself.

Im digging up a piece of bonsai thread fossil here but any chance of reviving it for the sake of the species?

I know of three of these trees and I dug up suckers today, also have a large airlayer going on one of these

But this is the only mention Ive come across as to the use of this tree for bonsai and also the only photo on the web of one

Amy chance your mate still has the tree? What does it look like now?

nice tree--wondering about opinions on presentation--would it look more stable or older or anything else if it were planted deeper so the lower trunk wouldn't look so bulbous(reverse taper) or is this an acceptable feature of this tree?

Hi Leigh,

Looks familiar, and is probably a Hawthorn. Check the street trees along Northbourne Avenue, Canberra.
