Anyone know of any sources of zeolite or diatomite in Brisbane?

Which side of town are you on?

If you're on the Northside then you can get diatomite from a number of pet stores as 'Kleensorb'. 'Pet Hypermarket' at Virginia has it and another large pet store on Stafford road at Stafford stocks it.

As an alternative I have been using another product called 'Aquatic' from RichGrow. It's a substance called 'Spongelite' and has similar properties to diatomite but is a better colour (brown). This stuff is available at Bunnings (dare I say their name).

Actually, my preferred mix at the moment is a combination of diatomite, spongelite and sometimes pine bark.

Hey Steve

I'm on the northside, not far from the pet hypermarket so I'll go and have a look there.

I did try something called FATSORB but it just crumbles when it gets wet so it's pretty useless.

Which section at B did you get the aquatic and which store did you get it from, I was looking for something like that at Stafford but couldn't find anything.

Also where do you get pine bark small enough to use I've only seen the big stuff you use in gardens.

Thanks Regan

Maidenwell have a warehouse in the Port of Brisbane, thats where I get mine from. They sell it in 40 litre bags of various sizes for $10 a bag.

You just have to send them an email with your order and let them know you want to pick it up at the warehouse. If they have what you want in stock you can get it straight away.

Dunno what Fatsorb is, but I use "Kleensorb" from Mt Sylvia Diatomite. It is about 1mm-7 mm in size

We can no longer get Maidenwell in Sydney.

Regan,
'Aquatic' is in the fertiliser/specialty potting mix isle and looks like this: attached

The pine bark comes from something like 'Debco Succulent Mix' you can sift if you like but I tend not to anymore as it's quite course and I only use a small amount.

Maidenwellmine no longer has the product at its wharehouse in Brisbane you have to have it shiped from the mine. The price is $9.40 per 40kg bag + GST or if any one is interested in bulk orders it is $309 per ton + GST.

I use the 2-7mm for the soil mix.

I also have a bag of 7-15 for the bottom of the large growing pots.

adding some form of an organic mix will also be a good idea, I use a premium potting mix that i get from a local nursery suplier, it has some sharp sand mixed in too, which is a good idea, my mix for a general rull of thumb is 80% diatomite, 20% organic mix/sharp sand. I usually adjust this depending on what tree is going into it, if it is a pine or juniper it gets more diatomite around 90%, if it is something that likes more water like a swampy i go with more organic which is around 60% diat. 40% organic.

I also mix in a good handful of slow release, and also give the top soil a good handful of slow release/dynamic lifter.
