Defoliated the figs

The January meeting at Albury/Wodonga is traditionally a fig workshop. We had 6 members busy defoliating and repotting and a couple of trees planted to develop as root over rock.

Here's a couple of my ficus rubiginosa after defoliation and trimming.
The small twin trunk was defoliated a little over a week before to give it time to shoot before the native show at Canberra in March. It already has shoots all over the stems.

All these trees were grown from seed started at the same time.

I have bought some fig seed in the past and it has never worked for me. The advice I have suggest that it may be the seeds are not fresh enough.

nice mate i like alot . i just gave mine a good pruning but didnt defoliate as i usually would since im heading down your way in 2 weeks and didnt know how they would react especially the melon seed and willow leafs. again love them especially the third one

i just defoliated one of my figs today, ready for fine wiring, i got half way through then it got to dark. will finish it tomorrow.

I tried for my first time this year. Got a whole bunch of Ficus obliqua, Queensland small leaf figs. Dont really want them now i won a larger one.

At The School Of Bonsai i had a lesson about growing from seeds. I wrote down that Clinton recommends for figs to be germinated as soon as possible. Dont cover fig seeds with soil. Very lightly sprinkle peat moss over if needed. Keep moist and in shade. Humidity is beneficial.

I know what you mean about not wanting them but since I have failed before I would like to get some germinated. Maybe I will give them away

Dont really want them now i won a larger one.

if you have enough make a frame from wire and attach them to the frame like dugzbonsai.com does to tridents

figs should have a similar outcome, they have fusing ability, fast growers and can be pumped full of fert

Mate. if your seed is fresh then it is the right time of the year for figs to germinate. Only time I reckon they wont germinate for you would be in those lovely winters you have out there . If the seed isn't totally fresh try soaking it in water for a few days, sometimes brings seed back from the brink.

Very nice figs.
Growing from seed is not difficult but takes time. I only use it when I can't get certain species.

Fresh seed is critical to good success.
Seed I have purchased often contains no seed at all but dust. Naturally, no germination.
