Trimming Angophora costata

Hi all,

"Kunzea" and I trimmed the large Angophora costata on loan from Ted Poynton two weeks ago; 14th December.

Today some new growth has started elongating and there are still heaps of buds swelling back down the branches that are also about to open.

Some areas were timmed to old but existing growth and some were trimmed back to bare branch(especially vertical growth). It seems to be budding evenly no matter where we trimmed it.

Enjoy and/or come and see it in a few weeks time.

Hi Jarrod,

It is one of my favorite Australian bonsai as well. I first saw it in the early 1990s and I was so glad when Ted offered it to us as a loan. It meant a lot to me personally as well as corporately.

I will keep udating on this tree and will get a studio shot when it is at its absolute best; if I can get it into the photo area. It will take the help of about 3 extra people to safely manouvre it out the front gate, up the path, around the back and then into the garage; and then reverse the trip after the photo.

An interesting foilble I have noticed is that it is growing strongest on the lower branches rather than the apex; however it is not sprouting from the Lignotuber as it would if it were totally basally dominant. That is why it is such a good long term subject for Australian bonsai.

I will trim some of the excess busds and growth on the lowest branch to push some growth into the upper layers if necessary over the next 2 to 4 weeks.

Like many others here, this is the tree that first got me inspired to try Eucalyptus (and associated genera) as Bonsai (well, got me inspired to try Bonsai generally). I had seen a photo of it in Jennifer Wilkinson's "Bonsai: Art And Technique", but the picture didn't depict the sense of scale that the tree does when viewed in person. I was disappointed that the Angophora was not at Ted's place last time I visited, but was rapt to hear that it was spending some time in the ACT. I told Ted that I believe this tree to be the flagship of Oz Native Bonsai, and he merely nodded.

Are there plans for a repot while the tree is in the Capital Territory, or is your custodianship limited to 'maintenance' (pruning, watering, fertilising, etc)?

Hi Fly,

The tree is for the moment just on loan and so we trim, water and fertilize(NO Osmocote were Teds instructions although most of the other trees have or get Osmocote as part of their feeding regime).

It has not been repotted for Yonks( a botanical term for a long time) but if it is with us next summer and Ted agrees or donated then it will certainly be repotted at the first opportunity. It is very heavy and takes a few people to handle it safely.

The photo in the book was taken in 1985 according to Ted and it looked in very good health. It is certainly an imposing tree and it certainly is a flagship tree for Australia. I was very happy for the collection when he offered/agreed to loan it to us.

Jeez Brettles! The least you could do is offer to lend a hand... I would love to offer my time (and air fare) to come and help, so long as the repot happened at a time when I could be available.

I am at home at the moment but from my memory it is 140cm tall.
