Curl Grubs

Post by kcpoole »

Many times I have repotted a tree, and had to do an emergency repot due to Curl Grubs invading the soil.
They feed on the roots of the tree and will do so until the tree dies.

As I do not like using Chemicals on my trees, I soak the pots to kill the grubs.

if you suspect that you have an infestation, Immerse the pot completely, and leave submerged for at least 1/2 and hour. Most times the Grubs will climb to the surface of the soil and will expire there. Feed them to the birds :-)
While you are soaking the pot you can add some Charlie Carp or Seasol to the water to fertilise at the same time.

Great advice Ken!
As an added bonus, when I do this I collect the grubs and feed them to my fish, turtles and lizards - they LOVE them!

Use the road base soil mix and you won't get curl grubs.... but you are welcome to feed the ones you find in nursery pot soil to the birds, fish and reptiles.

The Curl grub infestations is one of the reasons I moving to a Non organic soil based on Maidenwell. I feel that the grubs will not like it all and leave me and my trees alone

I must have a different species of curl grubs as mine can swim, or at least, happily exist underwater. While searching for a method of forcing them to the surface of pots I tried a solution of condies crystals...after 24 hours immersed in the solution the grubs emerged unscathed but clothed in a royal hue.
