Have you checked out the ANBG native bonsai show gallery (http://www.anbg.gov.au/bonsai/ )? There are a few 'different' stands there. Those not 'Asian' are polished wooded slabs, but there are also some log stumps and granite slabs.

Hey Ken, can see you dont come from the bush. The out back dunny was made of tin with a pine lid.
Should get hold of one of those, that would look the perfect part then.

The newspaper cuttings hanging on a hook can be the accompaniment, or should that be the aussie equivalent of a scroll?

Re: Re Australian style: Stands?
Well, my husband made me a new plant pot today, we were going to use it for Alecost, but it could be a large cascade pot... Maybe we could make a smaller one with a VB can, hmmm.

Re: Re Australian style: Stands?
Recently I was lucky enough to get a stand which has been made from a plank that was originally part of a bridge. It is obviously quite old and surprisingly heavy. A large hole remains as evidence of a metal spike which once secured the plank to the bridge[/attachment]
I have no idea what the wood is, perhaps redgum?
