Large Privet

Post by Raniformis »

Big old privet I dug towards the end of autumn. It's hard to find big stumps like this so I'm happy to have stumbled across this one.

Is someone missing part of a hedge?

I almost had a good one that construction workers had dug up. But someone had completely ring barked it and cut halfway through the trunk. :palm:

You can make that pretty decent within a couple years with some carving and branch development.

Haha, if only we could  This one came from a house demo down the road, had to dig it myself though.

I'm hearing you, most privet seem to be all suckers, it's a pity someone destroyed it on you. Last year I had my eye an old azalea that was about 2' tall with a good 2" thick trunk and the house got demo'd before I got to it. Could have cried.

Yeah the carved privet look awesome, not sure where I collected these pics so cant credit the creator but I'm aiming for something like this.

That privet is from Harry Harrington. He has some good videos/photo progressions on developing ramification - especially in trees collected from hedges! Check him out.

Looks like you need to get the carving tools out. If you can get it even half as good as that one in the photos you’ll be doing well.
