Eucalyptus nicholii 1

This was purchased as a $5 starter seedling from Erina Wildflower Nursery in 2020

Personally I think Eucalyptus is not a great genus for shohin. I think they look best as a larger tree.
Each to their own though. This species is very thirsty, and you do not want to let them dry out.
It thrives in a faster drainage medium, and loves full sun as long as the medium doesn't get dry.
The species tolerates a heavy root removal and is a lovely choice of material to work with.

I plan on growing this as a multi-stemmed clump.

Most Eucs won't make good shohin, due to leaf size, but E. crenulata, E. bridgesiana and E. cinerea have smaller leave to start with (and all beautifully blue-green!). They may not like the warm humid coastal areas, that's to find out. They grow strongly in Canberra and Melbourne.

Placed into a Pat Kennedy bonsai pot (Australia).

Once these guys are in full sun, Myrtle Rust has almost no noticeable effect on them. Its only when you heavily reduce the foliage in a non-growing period that its dangerous with myrtle rust.

This guy is powering on, and I'm looking forward to having this as a mutli trunk Euc develop.

Hi there, will the bulbous trunk develop into a stem on this species. I’ve just picked up a few of these about this size (In NZ) but really I want to develop a trunk…. Will I get there do you think?

I'm having trouble following your question. The base is simply the start of the trunk, and it will constantly throw out new shoots from the base. The base is a little over-thickened as I have cut it back quite a few times over the years. But its very easy to develop the trunk on these yes. Once all Eucs take hold in a decent sized pot, they will thicken pretty quick. I would not recommend ground growing Eucs. They easily thicken in pots quickly, and you'll get more success by keeping the roots in check by growing in a container.

I love this species of Eucalyptus. The standout feature is the small leaf size. This will be grown like a mallee clump.
I always loved seeing PeterH's nicholii updates, as it inspired me to try this.

It gets a bit affected by myrtle rust over winter, but as long as its got a full head of hair and you place it in the sun during winter, it comes good in Spring. Beautiful tree.

It looks a bit shabby, as its recently been put into its new home.
Placed into a really nice PK yellow round.

So I have reluctantly cut the main trunk. I want a flush of new growth down low on the empty side of this Euc and want to do it now before I really get fond of the tall trunk. This will promote a good flush of new shoots hopefully on the baron side of this tree so that I can get a good spray of growth all around this Euc.
I love this species, its a delight to work with. After seeing PeterH with his nicholii it ignited my love of these so many years ago.

When you grow these with Myrtle Rust, you have to be very diligent and not over water them, nor allow them to dry out, nor cut a lot of foliage off, or the Myrtle Rust really gets hold.
