[SYANBS] Promethius’ Nothofagus gunnii entry

Nothofagus seeds from eBay seller. I wasn’t able to grow one from seed when I was actually living in Hobart, and I doubt I’ll have more luck in Melbourne. Still, why not?

I understand that germination is difficult, long, and an exercise in self flagellation; there’s no clear guidance I could find otherwise. For lack of other options, I put these in warm water a week ago, then left them for a week in a dark, cold cupboard. Changed the water once, started cold stratification this evening.

I’m excluding myself from any prizes (but maybe if I win I’ll get myself something nice).

Planted out over the weekend, about 5mm deep.
1:1 perlite and coir, vermiculite icing.
I understand these may take 6 months so I’m definitely not holding my breath.

Hey Promethius

I got some N gunnii seeds too. Not expected much success in my climate. In doing some research I came across a database of Tasmanian native seed germination put together by the Tasmanian Royal Botanic Gardens. Link https://gardens.rtbg.tas.gov.au/conserv ... ndatabase/

Here's a screenshot of the results for Nothofagus gunnii

As you can see they tended to have good success with the best results at 20c with alternating day night light. Germination within 2 weeks. Might be a little late for yours, I am going to sow mine this weekend straight outside. Our day temps often in the high teens at the moment.

That’s really handy - cheers! I can always try again once Spring is well established if there’s no luck by then.

These don’t look to have been a success. I’ll update this thread if time proves me wrong.
