I have to say that the original root arrangement seems far more appealing than the new 'after' view. Those splayed out straight roots don't do anything for me.
I assume by turning 4 way brances into 3 you mean you have pruned wherever the branches split up into more than 1 side branch? That's really vital but I think you really need to go the rest of the way and turn as many 3s as possible into 2s. There's one prominent 3 on the left branch. That area is already thicker than the branch below and will only get worse while there are still 3 (2 branches and a leader) there.
Most of the other branches look like they are made up of short sections but that left branch has 2 long, straight sections. Those sections don't ahve any buds so no matter how hard you try you won't get buds along there. I know it seems harsh but you will eventually have to cut them off and rebuild the branch from one of those branches with shorter nodes near the base.
