Hi all,
This morning when I was passing a stand of English elm suckers by the side of the road I decided to have a closer look and low and behold - behind them was an area where they had been chopped down in the past year or so and so there was heaps of nice larger trunks with shoots/trunks coming off them. Well, I only had my secateurs and a trowel with me so I decided to just dig up a small one that my bent trowel could handle.
Anyway, after a bit of work I managed to lift the thing. It looks like it has a large, round lignotuber and under that, a root that looks like a large sweet potato - it is that swollen. It looks so strange that I brought it home and put it in a pot, completely forgetting to take a photo. I cut the tuberous looking root in half to fit the tree into a pot and threw the tuber bit in some soil to see if it would shoot new roots and foliage. I might dig it up tomorrow and take a pic. The tree looks unlike an elm with a trunk on a large round tuber, maybe more like an olive or eucalypt.
Anyway, is this normal?
Deb

Re: Unusual elm
Hi Krazykangaroo , Is this pic 1/ similar to what you have just explained .This it a damaged root of an elm that was continuously slashed with a mower and as the shoots regenerate they swell the main root causing a bulbus type growth in the root,
i plucked this off above the ground last week .They will shoot eventually if covered and kept moist . In pic 2/ this is a series if roots from a single tree that was damaged i presume by waterlogged ground , it has fused together. Numerous dead small trunks were found on this specimen when collected .It was pushed out by a dozer laying a fire break last Summer and has taken until now to sprout .It is around 400mm in diameter and 100mm thick ,they look unusual like cypress Knees on a Bald Cypress .I call them Turtle backs ,i dont know what the correct name or term could be .They should look quite different in a forest type setting .Slab on a slab forest for my Big one , now thats breaking the rules .CheersYou do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Wow, I love that. I am definately going back to where I found mine (in a nearby town) and checking out some of the larger stumps for unusual swollen roots now.
