Another Easy tree collecting

My friendly landscaper called the other day, asking if I was interested in a largish bougy that was going to come out and then another call a few days later regarding 30 odd smallish Buxus that we going to be pulled.

I advised that i was a time poor at the moment due to Gang Show commitments ( https://www.gangshow.asn.au/ ) but as I had the day off today I could pick them up last night.
My mate was super kind enough to dig them out and keep them in seasol till I could pick them up, which I did lasst night and got to pot them up today (5 more to go).

Tip for all, Find a friendly Landscaper and tee up with them to take any unwanted material, You never know what you can get hold of

Anyhow a few posts to show the trees. Starting with the bougy.

It is a multi trunk tree with movement in them with a trunk base of about 200mm or so. Lets see where this goes over the next few years
Note the large roots were cut back hard to get into a pot, and it should be OK I think.

I cut the Buxus roots back hard to prep them and to fit them in the pots.
There are smallish and will create nice Shohin trees I think so well worth it. They have a typical basal flare that these get and all have low branching as well.

When i collect trees like this, I cut the roots back then hard as no point leaving them to develop more bad ones while recovering.
this way net time I repot I will not have to worry about root work at all, and I will be able to get them into a smaller pot sooner.

I think I will be keeping 4 of these, and the rest probably will end up an the beginners classes (after recovery), and failing that, the Ausbonsai sale day next year.

this one was interesting in that it is very typical of the type of material we coollect from gardens and such.
They are buried low and develop a higher root collar in the soil that can swell the trunk underground and preclude us from using the low roots. I cut this trun below that upper collar and then thinned out the roots there, nibbled back the downward stump and then will pot up as a nice little mother daughter tree for the future.

At the collection / cleanup time, you need to make drastic decisione sometimes to make the best of the material, and if you don;t then, you will spend years with a less then factorisation tree.

Had a missed call when I go to work from my Landscaper advising that he dug another tree yesterday, and if I wanted i can collect from West Ryde on the way home from work.
He suggested I take the ute to work instead of the bike.

As i already was at work and on the bike, I was sort of stuck.
The Azalea looked OK so i grabbed some cable ties and twine and off we went on the way home to have a look see.

It Fitted on the bike OK and was more stable that some pillions I have carried so happy dayz!!
I should have cut it back a bit as it had a bit too much windage on James Ruse drive @ 100Km/hr but it all worked out fine. Sure got some funny looks on the way

While tying it on, i was wondering if it was actually legal, but the Highway patrol car that went past did not bat an eye, so figured it was OK

Got home, washed out the root ball and cut the stump back to fit in a a 300mm Orchid pot. Cut back the top to remove some foliage and straight sticks that will not work in the future then potted up into Kanuma.
Now On the bench in full sun, water in with seasol every few days and cross the fingers

It had one light pink flower on it which should be real nice, and as such it is one of those old varieties that some thing don't make good Bonsai, so we will wait and see

The dedication and devotion of the Bonsai Artist (Read...Addict, a person who can't help themselves) to be admired by us who need Utes to accomplish our missions. Bravo Ken

Out an about po9king around the garden while watering this morning, I spied a few flowers on this Azalea that have come out.
I thought they all got blown off on the way home, but obviously not.

Happy to see they are quite small and nice soft pink and white With the trunks and base it has, this means that this one is going to be quite special in a few years!!

If anyone can do an ID for me will be much appreciated.

I know nothing about azaleas but it looks like a nice double. I think we grew one in the wholesalers called rose queen but I'm sure it was a little darker than that.
