Privet?

Post by MasonC »

Hi everyone,
I was wandering around my garden today (my usual collecting spot) and there is always heaps of small privets everywhere and I decided to fuse about 20 of them.Has anyone ever done this before? If so, would love some feedback.

Hey mason fusing privet works really well, you saw the fused maples I think last time you visited the nursery, they go like those but even quicker, being such fast growing. If you make a small incision(tiny into bark about 1-2mm) in the trunk where each truck touches you will find they fuse within 6 months. Hope this helps

Hi Mason - they will fuse quickly.

Lean on your Mum to get you some electrician cable ties - really cheap, but will hold them nice and close together.

The only thing you have to do is keep your eyes on the cable ties and get ready to cut them before they cut into the bark.

Given the rate of growth of Privet, you may need to wrap with cable ties two or three times before the plants have fused together.
BUT it sure is a quick way to get an end result.
Regards
Steve

depending on the way you do this mason, whether you put them around a frame or just put them all together make sure you put movement into it.
if you dont you will end up with a rather dead straight trunk.
just an idea if you didnt think bout that already :D

I fused about 10 of them a few years ago. They were all really young, with trunk sizes between 1 and 3mm thick. I just bundled them together in my hand, then wrapped wire around them, as if i were wiring a regular trunk. I added movement to them too. Within approx 2months they had fused, with only small vertical groves in the bark to prove it was fused. I gave it away at this point, so im not sure what it looks like now. Unless the bark colour was different on one of the seedlings, id assume it would be undetectable by now.

Good luck!
