Hello Wal,
Not too sure what you mean above.
Your tree is too tall for your pot.
I would remove all your wire, cut your tree below the first branch.
I would Slip Pot your new stick into a pot at least twice the size of the present pot.
I would water daily as required, maybe twice daily depending on temperatures and your potting medium composition.
I would fertilise as per recommended rate on a weekly basis.
I would NOT go messy with the trees existing root ball now.
Summer is growth time for your entire tree - don't go setting the root ball back now and subsequent foliage regrowth, wait for winter / spring for that.
Your tree needs its existing roots to push new buds out.
New buds will quickly develop into small branches of which you will select left, right, rear, front and most importantly a new leader. REMOVE all other buds.
NOW focus on developing a structure with the above ground parts.
Sorry but ATM your tree will only make

one bonsai style which is literati.
Then rest your tree until late winter,
Most important is the tree's health and rest is a major part of Bonsai health.
Be patient always.
Hope i have helped somewhat.
OR if anyone could add what i may have missed.
Enjoy,
Kevin
