Vegetarian Fertiliser?

Hey all,

Tried searching the forum (and the web) though couldn't find anything, or perhaps I need go back to intetnets school, haha.

I'm a fairly new vegetarian and just noticed most products contain non vegetarian bits.

Just trying to find some fertisliser (in Australia) which doesn't use animal / fish products and is suited for bonsai?

If anyone can recommend places to try that ship to Sydney? Happy with personal messages if this could be considered promotional/free advertising.

Try this website, they have a nice range of products that are vegan/vegetarian. I use their products and I've been satisfied so far.

Although I don't have much experience using it myself, I've heard worm castings are pretty awesome

The main problem is trying to get enough phosphorus. You can use straight soya bean meal as a general fertilizer for non fruiting/flowering species.
Also remember that all ''manufactured'' fertilizers are non animal. eg ammonium sulphate, superphosphate, calcium nitrate etc tetc.

So I'll try some of the "LifeForce Gold"? The other fertilisers seem to be for flowering or fruit plants, is that right?

Sorry, while having some bonsai age I am comletely new to feeding soil!

Hi Daniel,

Yes, I would use the "LifeForce Gold," but I wouldn't hesitate to use "Instant Humus" or the "Organic Boost." While they are for fruiting and flowering plants, they're *not only* for those types of plants; I use them for all of my bonsai.

Can I be a little controversial here?! Just because you are vegetarian, does that mean your trees need to be as well!?

Haha ... good question Sir Theodore, yes, you can be controversial!

I do not push my belief on others.

If my garden relies on me, it chooses to rely on a vegetarian as a gardener/carer ... therefore it's also chosen my lifestyle.

Woah-ahh!!! Quick update: I applied some of the LifeFroce Gold few weeks back and now all my trees have responded well! My litttle Oak, which I was worried as it had lost most of it's buds, is back budding with many new shoots, one close up of the trunk one here:



While my maples seems to both have new shoots looking to jump out the ends of branches/leaves in many places!

The fig is also shooting new leaves, though this I concede may be co-incidence as figs have a summer spurt, right?

Anyway, thanks again ... such a positive response and experience with first time vegetarian fertiliser!

Your question really isn't that controversial. The answer to your question is a long a complicated one, but the TL;DR version basically amounts to a person who is vegan or vegetarian wants to limit the amount of animal products they buy, whether it's for themselves, their pets, or the plants. Cats can't have vegan or vegetarian diets so you shouldn't try to feed them that kind of diet. Plants can still grow without having to feed them fish emulsion or bone meal, so as a vegan or vegetarian it's quite acceptable to feed your plants fertiliser that doesn't contain animal products.
