Japanese maple airlayer

Hey all,

I have a Japanese maple with some reverse taper that I'd like to airlayer off the tree. It's just beginning to leaf out now, is it to late to perform an air layer? Is it likely to bleed from the cut?

It is probably a bit early when leaves are just opening. Wait until the new leaves have hardened a bit then layer.

Is it to late to air layer Japanese Maples?
I'm relatively new to your forum and have been reading from a far for a bit. I'm finding the diversity of topic's very helpful and informative.
I'm seeking some guidance if I may.
I have air layered the last 2 years row, generally in Late July till mid August and cut off limbs in approx. early March. Out of 12 attempts, 11 successes (of varying manners) but generally with good root balls.
Unfortunately this year I missed the spring run up and haven't done any this year. is it too late or can the air layer be applied at any time.
My basic reading suggests that it should be applied leading out of a dormant stage.
I'm fearful that if I apply now, summer may come with a sudden heat wave and cause stress to the plant.

Did you not read the reply above Buzzen?
You can make layers in winter or summer. Just avoid the period when they are coming into leaf and just after. I usually wait until the leaves have matured then it seems to be OK again and usually roots start quite quick when the tree is growing.
