Bougainvillea Thorns

Post by hard1all »

I've always 'understood' that if you cut off the thorns on a bougainvillea you won't get flowers.
Is this true?
If so, does it apply to hawthorn and other flowering plants?

I have around 8 boug's, none with thorns as have been removed, and all have flowers. Bougie thorns do not grow back.
I two other flowering thorny natives and they both flower with thorn removal, both of these the thorns grow back.
Hawthorn could not say but it won't hurt it to remove the thorns so try it (I have not had a Hawthorn with thorns).
