Trident Maple thread grafts

This was a nice trunk until "Bear" decided to chew off the lower branches .

This has a base of 150mm x 100mm , with an 80mm trunk so I decide to thread graft some new roots to the base and new branches to replace the lost ones . A clean cutting self boring auger bit was used to drill the holes through the base and trunk .

"The Hacker" has been on my case to purchase a large trident to replace his large tree that died last year . This now resides in Melbourne and will update on my next visit .

Hi watto , being a chippy I have an array of self boring bits 400mm long so drilling through thick bases and trunks is a simple task .

Do you find thread grafts more successful than other grafting techniques?

Hi Mate , I find thread grafts easier than other grafting techniques where branches have been damaged and the success rate much higher . Inarch grafts usually form a large swelling at the union and can be dislodged even after a couple of seasons , setting the right angle can also be problematic . If this tree was to stay here the donor whips would have been set in a grow bed along with the main trunk . I have used long leggy branches/shoots off the same tree to thread graft however they don't seem to fuse and thicken as quick as separate donors . All the entry and exit points are where original branches/scars were so there wont be any additional scars on the trunk

Another delivery and visit to the Brother in the big smoke during a hectic working schedule resulted in a couple of pics on my phone

. These are in full sun on the deck out of harms way . Chris is stocked to have this trainer after he lost his old trunk . He is under strict orders to look after this a bit better than the rest of his tree's .
