I am not saying that other nurseries and bonsai nurseries have poor soil, but the soil you can purchase from Bonsai World is just....

Over many years I have alternated between the different nurseries depending on the results of my trails, and thus I have found this to give the best results so far.
Okay, so first off I have trialled many different soil options in full sun, part sun and strong shade.
The best mix by a very big margin was from Bonsai World because it was the quickest to drain. I did not mix in any other additives to the soil. I simply trialled all the options fair and square in the same sized orchid pots, with and without trees in them. (the trialled trees all had a similar sized root ball and foliage)
Now just to set the bar even higher, they have 2 different options for their soil. So for really thirsty trees you might be safer using their standard mix. Their faster draining mix is perfect for stock that don't like their roots too wet. It is perfect for Maples, Pines, Banksia etc. Then the standard mix is for your average material that isn't so fussy. Of course, having 2 different levels of draining mix means you can mix the 2, and have 3 different levels of mix to experiment with. Its like 'soil for dummies' made easy.
And the price?

Bonsai World, 51 Watagan Forest Drive, Jilliby NSW 2259 (About 1 hour north of Sydney, and 1 hour south of Newcastle)
I guarantee you will not be disappointed. We are very lucky to have this bonsai nursery in full operation now. They really are doing such a great job down there.
