Partial defoiliation of a Cork Oak?

Post by Ces »

Hey guys,

I've got a question about a Cork Oak that I've got in the making. I've been trying to let the lower branches run to increase their thickness, while simultaneously pruning the top fairly hard. However, its not having the desired effect. Lower branches pretty much stagnant and top going crazy.

I've thought about a partial defoliation (i.e. just the crown and upper branches) later this coming spring but not sure how this would go on a Cork Oak.

Whats the consensus on this plan?

Appreciate the help guys.

Cheers,

Ces.

You should be able to defoliate cork oak safely. Even though they are evergreen leaves will still grow back.
Slow lower branches seem to be common with these so please let us know if you find a solution.

Thanks shibui. I appreciate and trust your advice mate. I'll give the partial defoliation a go in November sometime and see how we go.

Maybe report back on the progress towards the end of summer next year.

Thanks again mate.
