I am surprised you do not defoliate your maples In January to obtain a new set of undamaged leaves so you get better colour in Autumn :lost:

I thought that was standard practice for any decent looking deciduous tree ?

It was done last year but I felt it was a bit weak this year. I'm not sure they like it every year.
The tridents were done tree times this season but only partially - not every leaf.

Would you consider just defoliating the top, if the tree isn't in optimum health?
