ID needed

Hi guys, bought this plant at BW on the weekend & no one can ID it for me. Where should i cut it first the trunk is 8cm diameter at the base.Its over150 cm tall.The roots seem ok as i cannot even see many showing when out of the pot.
Its just been knocked around. They were going to toss it out , i bought it for $6. this is the Tree in the photos from all four sides. Id like to hear your views as what to do on it. Petra!

Petra is the leaf hard or soft in your hand.

This is a soft leaf, the stems and branches are very hard.

is it sort of like a peppercorn tree, no the bark looks a little different

No. Its defenately not a peppercorn leaf.

airlayer like crazy or put it in the ground and grow the trunk???
cant think of much more unless you want to go literati, but i havent seen to many broad leave species in the leterati style either?

i think you need to get it a bit healthier tho.
then do trunk chops and choose new leaders if you choose to ground grow

I would keep it in general conditions such as semi shad keep out of frost and watch the watering carefully until it regains vigor and hopefully you will work out what it is. If not once it regains vigor do some experimental chopping back. Maybe half the tree and see if it shoots back any to start with.

Alright Petra, going for the wild, wild guess albeit with a little bit of observation. I have a bay leaf tree at home which has a similar look.

do bay trees have the serations on the leaves??? i thought they were smooth edged??? not sure though

No not a Bay tree i have one .

looks similar but celtis australis seems to have deeper serations in the leaf, but it might be a hybrid of this....

petra's leaf seems to be slightly thinner in the width of the leaf to, as i said though might be a hybrid as such or something like that. cant think of the word for it

Looked celtis australis up and once i saw the leaf knew it wasnt it. The leaf is a bit like a fresh camelia leaf kinda soft feel. This has got me stumped, normaly i can identify trees easily. I took the leaf to every nursery and no luck,it was just the wrong day to ask. Ill take a leaf to Bunnings tomorrow and see what they have. thanks all for trying. Cheers!

Petra, I think maybe you might have Alnus jourulensis - Mexican Alder or Evergreen Alder.

If you can get an in focus closeup of the trunk, I will be able to tell.
