Autumn Collecting.

Discussions about propagating from cuttings, seeds, air layers etc. Going on a dig (Yamadori) or thinking of importing? Discuss how, when and where here.

Autumn Collecting.

Post by Jow »

I have a lot of digging planned this coming year and was hoping i could spread it out more outside of the usual early spring window.

Has anyone done much collecting in Autumn?

Have you had successes, failures etc?

What species have you had luck with? Decidious? Pine? Etc

Cheers,

Joe.

I have dug feral Pinus halapensis in autumn successfully.
Have not tried others at this time of year.

Thanks Neil, Were they old trees? Large stock or thin seedlings?

Natives appear to have a spurt of growth at this time of year where I am making it a good time to dig. I have had good success in the last month digging Tristaniopsis (water gum), Callicoma (black wattle), Eucalyptus and previously with Archirhodomyrtus beckleri (rose myrtle). However, I think it is best if you dig around the roots a few months before you lift these. Better still replace half the soil with an open mix a few months before.
Cheers,
Symon
