Absolutely brilliant carving work there.....

i have a huge elm that i plan to do a similar carving procedure to your maple.

Any tips you can point out to a first time carver...??

did u apply lime sulphur to the internals of the tree afterwards?

This isnt a great example of carving yamadorikid. My advice is to watch a graham potter video. I hope this link works

Squizzy, I am an absolute amateur, but not a young soul, if I may be so bold.

What is the harm in letting this progress for a few years and seeing what happens??
I would relish such a unique tree, if for no other reason than to see in which direction nature would guide my hand in moulding this tree to tell a story.

Hi julz

I agree. I just have to give nature a chance to show me the way rather than butting in all the time

Cheers

Yep nature is the number one bonsai artist.

It should look cool when they all fuse together. :)

Hi Squizzy , mate that could be the making of a couple of rafts . If you split it down the middle , lay it flat into a tray and its well on it way .You could carve any future dead area's to give the log /raft a profile .

Cheers .Alpine

Hi all,

This tree has certainly taught me a bit and thrown some interesting alternatives to the standard bonsai styles.( and all because I hacked the Shari out of it). I don't think there is a great deal to report but will post a few photos for those interested.

It has been neglected like most of my trees for a few years so it got a re-pot about 1 month ago for the first time in a few years. Am keen to get some vigor back. I love the sound of it as a hollow trunk laying over on the ground somehow but probably as one piece not two. This would however void the aerial roots that have formed as being a centerpiece of the design?Probably have to hack a few more good trees and see what both options could become.

cheers
