Testing a new potting mix.

The people who i get my soil from have asked if i would trail and idea for some Bonsai mix. It is costing me not a cent so i will certainly have a play with it. The main ingredient is coir peat, which has been done to death on this site, but the scoria he has is tiny, tiny, tiny. I also added purlite into the mix and plonked an air layered "Mikawe" yatsabusa into it. I have used them to mix my soils for a few years now (they make me a mix to my specs) and i am very happy with what i use. But i am not adverse to having a play so i will keep you posted.

Id be keen to see what pH that mix is.

The perlite, although great to air put a mix and use in potting mix in general, i recon in small pots would float to the top, but time will tell.

I don't recon the PH would be as low as normal peat moss (mine Ranges about 3-4 and I buffer it with dolomite lime)

Floating Perlite is not a real issue, and the benefits that it will deliver outweigh the floaty issue. Small or large pot some will certainly float off as you water but for the most part so too will some other components of the mix. Eventually it will all settle unless you are using really cheap stuff
