Nice stand, I have never seen one like this before, you might have to grow your own.
I did have something along the same lines but only about 5 cm high and 25 cm wide. I sold it because it overpowered every tree I tried to display on it. I think this is also the case for the one pictured even though it is a reasonably powerful tree.
Q: Why are we all here?
A: Because we are not all there.

Make sure you have plenty of ink in your pen to write the cheque Steven! They are great but very expensive!

Is it possible to carve something like the root stand with a block of wood?
Kind Regards

Yep, that's how they are made, if you have the skills and patience to do it!

I was hoping I would come across a reasonably priced one in Japan, I was disappointed :( even just small shohin sized stands of reasonably quality were extremely expensive.

That is expensive even if its for a shohin, I would expect the larger size to be double or even triple the price

While in Adelaide I pulled up the picture of this stand to ask Koji if he knew anything about it. 'Ah yes' he said, 'this is my customers stand and I styled the tree on it'.
Turns out it is a natural Camellia root and it was refined by a famous stand maker who is now deceased. The owner paid about 900,000 Yen which is around $9,500.00 :o

omg to the coincidence Steven, OMG to the beautiful stand, but O M G to that price tag.

The stand is just stunning! It by far eclipses any stand I've ever seen before.... even the tree on top of it is ironically shadowed by it!

I style Bonsai naturally, just as they would appear in the wild.

The thoughtfulness of the bonsai community strikes again...

On Saturday I received a call from John Henry who was at the BSV Sale and had found a root stand. After viewing a couple of phone pictures John purchased it on my behalf and was even prepared to package and post it to me. What a champion :hooray:

Today it arrived!
2015 June A.JPG
It was originally purchased in Japan around 30 years ago by a senior Victorian bonsaist who is now winding down his collection. Carved from solid Rose wood and weighing in at close to 2 kg, it now sits proudly on my shelf.

Thanks SO much John!!

Regards,
Steven

This might be a silly question, but is that a carved piece of wood to "look" like a root or a root polished and cleaned to look like it does...?

BTW: it looks awesome!

Not a silly question at all, but you are spot on. It is one large piece of wood which has been carved to look like roots. Pretty epic carving skills if you ask me.

Cheers,
Mo
