ebay 1 and 2 year old japanese maples

Post by mcgee »

Hey everyone im new to the site and new to bonsai :)
Im doing a beginners course up at bonsai northside just above brisbane in march and in the mean time doing lots of research, finding books, checking out nurserys and spending hours scrolling through this forum.
My question is does anyone have any experience from ordering japanese maples from ebay about 1 year old and some are 2.
They are only $16 for 2 one year olds (from victoria). your help would be appreciated
Cheers joe.

Hi Joe, I'd be buying trees that are already acclimatised and growing in brisbane conditions. best buying from a nursery so you can fully suss out your purchase (structure, disease etc).

If you're doing a course at Northside, I'd go there, tell them you're doing their course, and see what options they recommend for beginners, - they know their stock, and they know their course, so they should be give you the best fit. Also you'll build a good relationship, for which you'll feel more comfortable in the course, ask more questions and learn more.

Good luck :tu:
Cheers, Ryan

I think Ryan hit the nail on the head :)

While there are quite a few good sellers on ebay, I personally wouldn't risk it. Especially if you have a bonsai nursery close by :)

Thanks for the info. :)
Ive found a bloke in brisbane here that has a few as well so im going to check them out on sunday.
Got heaps of plans in my head at the moment and plan to have a few trees and seeds going at different stages to keep me busy. Ill steer clear of the trees off ebay then :)

I purchased 5 x 2yo black pines from eBay last spring. I'm in Adelaide, they came from Queensland, where well packed and heathy as can be. I have 4 left (my fault one died) :shake: but all four are doing really well so I guess it's just a case of buyer beware...doing some research on a seller and asking around can be a big help too. And remember you can't pick your own trees either which is a slight downfall
