Another generation of trees

Post by shibui »

Many of you will have gathered that I enjoy propagating plants. Every year I have more seed germinating and cuttings in to keep up a supply of plants to grow on - most for bonsai, some for garden use.

This week I pricked out a few seedlings.
Japanese Black pines:

I usually prick out pines when they are a bit smaller. These ones had already developed quite long roots.

So they needed to be trimmed a bit.......

.....before potting them up.

These are from seed off the JBP in our garden. It has developed fasciation but that has certainly not affected the viability of the seed. it will remain to be seen if these seedlings also end up fasciated :fc:
Note that the seedlings have been planted at an angle. Vertical trunks rarely make good bonsai :imo:

This year i have also tried a couple of maple species-

The friend who supplied this seed was quite correct. They do germinate readily :o

Also a pot of a Snake Bark maple - Acer davidii.

Always glad to know I'm not the only mad one who doesn't like wasting seeds/cuttings! One day I'm going to have more seeds sprouting than I have room for... possibly next spring, the way I'm going!
