informal trident maple
my trident maple received a 25cm top chop for this growing season i think it improved the look big time here are some pics of it popping this spring, i realise the trunk is not the most pleasing on the eye though it looks nice for summer

Re: informal trident maple
Which is the final picture Dane ? I think it needs more chopping - the section above the first part of the trunk is too thin and taperless. I would cut it back the first branch on the left in the last photo and regrow with some taper. The lowest branch on the right may have to go as well as it will thicken the trunk in the wrong spot. It would be ideal to get a sacrifice down low but then again it would also be ideal to win lotto

Hello Dane.
From what I see Bougy and yourself are right.
You: It looks nice in summer - Agreed!
Bougy: It is taperless above the first branch - Agreed!
For the long term and all year round benefit of this tree some taper would drastically improve this tree's appeal.
I like the summer silhouette though - it's coming along just fine.
Keep us posted!

One of the fabulous things about growing bonsai is as you get old and decrepit your trees get old and beautiful

Re: informal trident maple
Wow, don't wanna seem precious but this is far from the worst trident I've ever seen and I give you credit for posting your pics and being proud of your tree... I reckon the initial critique you got was kinda harsh. Might have had a bit of truth to it but the delivery of it was about as subtle as a sledgehammer. Hope that doesn't deter you from future postings/ pics and the resulting critiques that will no doubt come... Hopefully slightly better delivery from your peers in future!!?! From my perspective in any case, don't be discouraged!

Re: informal trident maple
hey thanks guys i was quite aware it wasn't ideal and have plans for further chopping, Critiques won't deter me,im 1 of those guys that has more trees on my bench than i can handle, i take all these comments onboard as i enjoy what you guys do with all yours, but like i said in the first post,im aware the trunk lacks appeal, its healthy and looks good to me whilst sporting summer foliage. thanks for comments
