Picking up again after 6 years.

Evening everyone,

My name is Joshua and this is my first post on here, I have been bonsai(ing) since I was fourteen years ago but lost everything (including my well earned tools) six years ago when I joined the ADF, Anyway after pretty well being overseas that entire time I have two years at home to back into the old great hobby. Though I still remember all the things that I have learnt I am unsure what is IT these days. Went the the old bunnings and found this today, got the warm an fuzzy for this Japanese Buxus and got it for a steal.

Anywho, I would like to get everyone's thoughts on what you would do with this, however somehow I can not upload images no matter what I do. Any help would be awesome.

Make sure the photos are smaller than 1Mb ( I work to 800 x 600 pixels and abut 100Kb)

An easy way to reduce large images is. If you are using a windows computer, open the program 'paint'.
It should be in your programs list. Otherwise just push the 'start' button on your menu bar, then literally type the word 'paint' into the search field, and push enter. It should automatically load your paint program.

Then, in the paint program, just go to 'File' and select 'Open'. Then try to locate the picture of the photo you are using. Once you have found the picture, select open.

Once the paint program has opened the file, you will see the picture there. Then go to the selection 'resize'.
Where it says 'Horizontal', change this number to 50 and select ok. This will reduce the picture by 50% each time.

Keep resizing the photo by going 'resize' and 50 and ok, until you can see the picture, which will automatically reduce the size each time.
Once you have done this to a size you are happy with, so that basically you can see the entire picture and it will all fit on the screen, then go to 'File' and 'Save as'
That should open a dialog box that will have an option to 'Save as type' ... Here you select JPEG.

Then save the file as a new name and once you have saved this new reduced file, you can try uploading the file to ausbonsai again.

By the way.... hello and welcome. I too got into bonsai at a young age of 18, ... and I too lost all my bonsai due to where I had to move into at the time too. I also almost joined the ADF, but luckily for me, (well depending on the way you look at it), they rejected me at the time, saying Howard's policy at the time was to hire more ethnic individuals, thus they pretty much said, 'sorry, we just don't have any positions at this point, try again next year'. Needless to say, I didn't bother after that.

Hello there, and welcome to the forum. I had difficulty with pics too initially. I copy them into my documents from camera or phone. Then highlight the pic and go to paint. Click image, and you will see the % then change to 25%. You will see on the documents list, the pic has changed to a smaller image and click save of course. Best of luck.

Just watch out the labeling on some of Bunnings stock. You should be OK in Sydney as the supplier is in Sydney. Here I found that the altitude and colder temps nearly killed my buxus.
So with tropicals and sub tropicals that are advanced in comparison to Armidale, tend to need some adaptation. Even kept indoors other than the really warm temps. But you should be OK in Sydney. These starters etc., are generally grown in greenhouse conditions. Best of luck

Bush bunny, thanks for the info when I was younger I lived on the Central Coast and found my Buxus were always in good order. Here's to a good second start.

Good for Bunnings how much did it cost? Was it from the bonsai section or the garden part.
It will need some trimming I would say, clear around the trunk possibly, but will leave that for the experts to answer.

I see potentially 2 different trees.
A small shohin or taller shohin / Kifu size

Start by looking at the trunk and find the line in there that shows taper and movement.
then look at the branching and see if they are where they need?

For the smaller one, cut back hard and regrow foliage.

For the larger, the trunkline is there but needs wiring in the apex and the branches need to be wired down and into place. Then cut back and regrow foliage and ramification

Bush bunny, just over $30 so not to bad there and definitely not in to bonsai section.

KC, I like your idea of the taller option. This was the thought pattern with the tapering. Looking at sitting down and staring long and hard at it..........again and then again, haha.

Any other ideas, hit me!!!!!!
