When to root prune a buxus?

Post by Stewart_Toowoomba »

Hi everyone

I have looked over the wiki and not found any further information....

When is the best time to root prune and repot a buxus?

I have two Japanese box that I want to get into.

I's think that the end of winter would be OK.....??

Thanks in advance.

Well wishes to everyone out there madly repotting!! Just not enough hours on the weekend :palm:

Hi Stewart,
Have a look at Repotting, and see if this helps.

Thanks BK

But there is still no definitive recommendation when to repot and root prune as I can see (or not see that is)

I trimmed and root pruned one of my New Guinea Privet yesterday. I'm clearly into the start of spring in Bendigo with a protected grow area I'll just need to check their moisture. I've root pruned the three I have at different time and the only thing I noticed about the timing was they didn't do much after a winter work out. :2c:
Patience is often a surprise.

I did a hard root prune and first potting of 3 large diameter Buxus Harlandii about 3 weeks ago and they appear to be doing very well.

Beautiful deep green colour. The roots were really dense after not having been repotted for about 7 years.

While we are one the subject. The Wiki list replanting time for deciduous plants says.....
"Re pot: Winter time or ideally just before bud swell."

The 'before' bud swell confuses me some. Should'nt it be 'at bud swell' instead of 'before bud swell'... :lost: ?

I interpreted it as "if you have a good idea of when your trees are going to bud, just before that is IDEAL but its ok if you do it when buds first appear".

I see what you mean because in a lot of cases it would be impossible to predict this.....

Which basically translates to the very very end of winter....

Hi Fredman,
I have deciduous trees such as Trident Maples that have buds, and Corky Bark Chinese Elms that have buds that have burst with new leaves forming. I will repot any of these now. Remember that with any repotting, the after care is very important. After potting just give the trees Seasol until you see new growth.
