I'm letting it dry out a bit thinking that I might be "killing it with kindness" by keeping it damp, and will move it to where it gets a bit more morning sun. It will go out to the benches again come the milder autumn weather.
Jan. Have a read of the latest newsletter (Dec 2013) from the Newcastle club. There is a little bit on the care of this species. I have a large one and they love water.
I've moved it outdoors to a shaded, moist spot where it will get some morning sun, plenty of fresh air and the same watering as the rest of the trees. Hope this will help it to recover as it is still loosing leaves. There is some hope though as it is also growing new ones on some branches.
This tree has gone to the Great Compost Heap, its leaves continued to fall, branches died back and it expired....Ah, well, I won't be as severe with the root pruning next time.
On the up side, it is a great excuse to look for another one to try, I quite liked this species and will persist until one survives my "care".
