Hi,
I have a load of Seachem Flourite hanging around and I am wondering if it would be a suitable ingredient for a bonsai soil mix.
According to the Seachem website its a "specially fracted, stable porous clay gravel". More info here:
http://www.seachem.com/Products/product ... urite.html
The particle size is about 3 to 4mm and the pieces have quite sharp edges.
Its used as a substrate in planted aquariums and is very free draining. It's PH neutral.
Would be interested if anyone has any thoughts or experience.
Also not sure what I should mix it with?
Cheers.

That is uncanny.
I just saw this at the local pet store

Also found some good non porous aggregate at the right size and colour.

From the lack of replies I guess nobody has tried this.
I'll be the pioneer and report back.

Looks great to me
I'd be interested to know the cost. I use diatomite as my porous substrate and it's very cheap. But brown substrate looks much better than white

It's about $35 for a 7kg bag. So its expensive. I am not suggesting anyone go out and buy it for bonsai, but I have load that is sat around doing nothing.DustyRusty wrote:Looks great to me![]()

I looked around for diatomite, but couldn't find any. Where do you buy yours Dusty?

It seems that everyone in Sydney gets it from Enfield produce: http://www.petandgarden.com.au/Aquaman wrote:It's about $35 for a 7kg bag. So its expensive. It's $23 for 35 litres. And the best part about substrate is you can reuse it

My mix is 50% diatomite, 25% blue metal and 25% cocopeat. It's easy, doesn't require sifting and cheap. But the white diatomite and blue of the blue metal is aesthetically pretty ugly. A clay coloured substrate would be nice. Maybe I should get some of that stuff for the tops of my pots.
