Collecting Melaleuca incana's

Post by Craig »

:gday: All,

a few months ago i discovered some really interesting melaleucas, i couldn't hold back any longer 8-)

The first tree is about 250mm or so high, it's a ripper little tree with a great natural shape. Potted into gravel and water roots teased out and most soil removed.

The other 2 are in the bag,

#2 is a series of branches which have crossed paths close to the trunk and fused together. It's small at about 150mm high.Potted into a small trainer pot and bonsai medium.

#3 is a natural exposed root tree, multiple trunks with alot of options.Potted into a bonsai pot and bonsai medium, moderately bare-rooted.

All 3 trees were treated slightly different to each other. They were all basically bare-rooted to differing levels. Before they were repotted they had started to wilt but 15 minutes or so after , had picked up and are all now looking good.

Seasoled and awaiting warm weather. :tu:

Ok, so what did you do differently to me then :?: :?: :?: :?: I have collected two Melaleuca's and both have defoliated totally and not looking good :palm: Both are swamp paperbarks. One was bare rooted the other not. Both had large roots, not many small feeder roots. Both trees are still green under the bark so I'm still hoping :fc:
You are going to have some great trees there, I am a little  I was admiring some Mels this week on the side of the road, they were twisted and gnarly, looked like they had had it tough but were healthy and seemed happy with big gnarly twisted trunks. I just wish I could collect them better with less stress to the trees. Any advice would be appreciated. Will be interested to see these trees progress.

Wowee, lovely haul there Craig!
Best of luck with all of them!
I am intersted to know why you chose to treat them all slightly differently being that they are the same species and you have had previous success with method of putting in gravel and water in an enclosed container?..(tree 1).
Are you experimenting and trying new things?...although I believe you have collected this species in the past using this method (tree 2 and 3 into the bonsai pot), before you settled on the gravel/water in a container with no holes technique.
Interested to hear your thoughts.
Cheers, Dario.

Love those trees Craig, a really nice collection, especially No. 3 for me. I am curious to know how long from collection to pot and what you did to the roots while in transit.

Well done :tu: :tu:

They're certainly very fine trunks, good movement and character in all of them. It will be good to see them progress.

A couple of questions, as always: why now? Why not wait till warmer weather? (Or doesn't matter?)
Second, have they come from swamp, and do they have a good root ball?
Third, will you be misting leaves, or are the damn things un-killable?

Thanks for posting,

Gavin

Josh, a few mels are known as swamp paperbarks so hard to relate which tree you have. Advice? Be a forward thinker mate, try , experiment, take note on what others are having success with both with species and aftercare. Think about what you want to achieve and what you have previously tried, be it success or failure.

Most trees i collect are given a foliage reduction of around 1/3, but not all. Mels that are put into water are also put out into direct sun, this is what they need and want. The existance of fine feeder roots is not totally necessary with some Mels as alot of the time they are the roots which die off first when collected, larger roots are the ones generally needed to regrow the tree.

Dario, I have not collected this species of Melaleuce before, I have been concerned that they will not respond well to collecting that is one of the reasons i have not tried until now.I do not think they are totally dependant on water for survival so I only put 1 into gravel. The other 2 are in a very good bonsai medium which should suit thier needs for now.

steve, I dug them out , carefully lifted into a plastic bag, tied off tightly and thats it. Collection to pot is an hour.

Gavin, not a swamp area but can be inundated with water when alot of rain. the soil is black dirt and the weather is warming now so this combined with the recentlt rains we have been getting is a good time for me.No special treatment for any collected tree in my house, all collected trees get the same treatment as all my other trees from day one, so no misting unless watering time. the roots on 1 and 3 are ok with bothe larger roots and some finer roots but i wouldn't call them rootballs just yet.The 2nd had basically no finer roots but some larger roots, all soil was washed from the roots and potted into the bonsai medium

Sorry Craig, I thought you had collected this species before and you were experimenting with bare rooting them to different degrees...so I wondered why you didn't use the same potting up method for all three.
It will be interesteting to see how they repond :tu2:
Cheers, Dario.

No probs Dario. Today the one in water is not looking the best, alot of wilting and I am considering moving it into bonsai medium this afternoon before I lose it. The other 2 are just great.

Interesting that the one in the water is the one wilting.
I suppose three isn't a huge sample, and it is early days in their collection, but it looks like you are already learning how they like to be treated post collection:tu2:
I hope they all survive for you! Those close up pics of the trunk on tree 2 look really good Craig.
Cheers, Dario. :)

Josh, I don't think you're likely to get much update since Craig has been banned. Too bad though I would like to see an update myself. Look like great trees with loads of potential.
