air layered Swamp Cypress - photos

Post by Stewart_Toowoomba »

Hi all

I've finally got the chance to up load my airlayering photos of my swamp cypress as mentioned in an earlier posting. I hope these photos encourage other members to give airlayering a try, at the right time of course.

Cheers

Stew

I have placed the new tree in the warmest part of my area and it looks terrific after about a week afterwards. I didn't tease the roots at all, just carefully packed good mix around them. I did place it on a plate though, to encourgae the roots to grow laterally.

Thansk for viewing. :D

The pot in the bucket is where the tree is placed 24/7. I put some fert in every now and again and change the water when i think about it and the tree has just powered on. It seems crazy but it LOVES having completely wet feet, as though it's in a swamp, hence the name i spose :palm: .

The base has easily doubled in thickness in about two years at most. The slight bend you can see in the trunk is the result of a trunk chop to a small leader whn i first bought the tree about 2 yrs ago. It has now completely closed up and you'd have no idea there was a wound there.

Cheers

Stew

Do you place it in water through the winter when it's browns off as well?

What was the idea of the cable ties down the trunk on the base. Looks like it has cut in a bit. Was that the intention??? to create rough bark or just a pretty pattern

not far wrong - i wound some bailing twine in a rough pattern around the base going up and also put some vertical cuts into the trunk at random intervals to promote a weathered an aged appearance. It has done the trick and the tree will look all the better for it in a few years. The base has expanded dramatically and the patterened appearance will blend in over a short time. The rougher you can be with the swampies the better they will look. They are like a cactus that expands as it sucks up more water!

Yes stays in the water all the time too, but i'll check this out with the more experienced members at the club meeting on the weekend too.

Now is a perfect time - in Brisbane you can do them all year round as they can be virtually evergreen up here. I did one in August and it is going well.
