Discussions about propagating from cuttings, seeds, air layers etc. Going on a dig (Yamadori) or thinking of importing? Discuss how, when and where here.
Good evening forumers-I have a rather large garden specimen dissectum maple and have for the first time noticed seeds - or at least I think they're seeds!!!!
Google has given me very little in terms of best ways to collect/store/propagate them with the highest chance of success...any tips from successful maple seed growers??? I am in south western Sydney. ? ripe seed ? ? Unripe seed ?
Seems very early for maples to seed.
Usually the ripen going intio autumn, and you can collect then.
Store in cool dry spot till winter then stratify and plant out late winter
Those double winged things are indeed the seeds of this maple. They have only just formed and will not be ripe until autumn so leave them alone to mature.
Seeds are ripe when they turn brownish, usually about the time the leaves fall off the tree. I usually collect seeds after the leaves have fallen because they are aesier to see then.
To grow them just sow in seed raising mix about 1/2 cm deep and leave them outside to experience winter chill. They will germinate when the temps start to rise the following spring.
You should note that seeds of these dissectum mapleas are not particularly fertile. Usually only 10 - 50% will germinate and the seedlings often die off during the first year.
Thanks for the tips-I know they have a poor success rate but just can't help myself-if I sew 100 and get one or two to survive then ill count that as a success!
