[Shane] Japanese Black Pine 1

Post by Shane »

Source: Leftover whip from Don Deluca's demo at the 2012 AABC convention. One of three he did no work on.
Cost: A beer.
Height: 120cm

Again, not sure I'll manage to get this down to 25cm, but Don's demo was about putting crazy bends in pines.

Yep, fun. Given that first kinked bend is about 25cm by itself, I foresee having to repot at a more extreme angle and then bend. :-$

Go for semi or full cascade the only restriction on size is no more than 25cm from top of pot to top of tree ;)

Does Shohin have a size limit for a cascade too? eg no more that 25cm Below the rim?

Steven has clarified in the comp thread that the tail on a cascasde can be as long as you like.

Tonight I've been reminding myself about how extreme bending techniques can be, in preparation for working on this whip.

Found this vid, which might interest you: http://vimeo.com/m/38617272

I'm hoping to not go a semi or full cascade. Instead, I want to put loads of extreme bends and loops. Will keep thinking and get back with my plan soon.

This evening, having been inspired by watching Mauro Stemberger do his workshops today, I came home and finally took the plunge with starting to style this tree. Mauro suggests that sparky's wire should be used over wet raffia, instead of just the wet raffia, in order to keep the moisture in for the tree's recovery. So I tried that. I didn't hear anything snap.

Nice bend with a fairly natural look to it. At least natural for the mountain pines I grew up with.

I'll have to try the electrical tape over raffia myself, I have some good bending to do pretty soon.
Cheers, Karl

Last night, Mauro was talking with someone else about extreme bends in JBPs like this (ok, more twisted than this). With a thicker trunk it is important to make sure you keep the gaps between all the twisted parts. Otherwise it ends up visually as a clump in the middle of the tree. Sharis at the extreme curve also will bring your eye to that area. The future of this tree will be wiring the branches into shape and sharis to force the live veins to grow in certain directions to enhance the curves.

Finally set aside time to wire the branches on this one and remove the downward needles. Not sure which front I prefer.
