Although I have been interested in bonsai for some time I am relatively new to Aus natives, but I have been blown away by the growth rate on this banksia.
I bought this as a stick in a pot and after a year or three put it in a plastic pot for about two years, and was amazed by how well it grew (I thought it was my good technique, but maybe its not?).
This year I cut it back quite hard and re-potted it into a real bonsai pot and then just gave it the regular water and fertilizer treatment. In just a bit over four months it has grown amazingly.
After winter, I will have another look and cut back.

Re: Banksia - Growth Rate
Yep i reckon they are fast growers too.
Have one myself and find that every 3 weeks or so, have to trim back to keep branches getting out of control.

Re: Banksia - Growth Rate
I agree. The larger banksia species - this one looks like B. integrifolia - grow strongly even in a pot and seem to continue to thicken quite quickly after they are in a pot, even if trimmed regularly to restrict the growth.
