[Ineligable] [Kigawa] Ligustrum sinense

Post by Kigawa »

This Small-leaved Privet (Ligustrum sinense) was pulled out of the ground and given to me for free in August 2010. It was approximately 500 mm tall, with no fine roots and no leaves. I planted it in a plastic pot. During the following 12 months, I allowed one branch to grow freely to be the future upper trunk and kept all other brunches shorter. According to the competition rules ‘branch removal’ is acceptable for the stock to qualify as ‘raw, untrained and no prior styling’. I assume that shortening some branches would be acceptable too since it is not as drastic as branch removal.
The tree was re-potted for the first time in August 2011 into a smaller plastic pot. In October 2011, I chopped the trunk and wired two lowest brunches. In the following months, I gradually wired the rest of the branches and pruned them to form the foliage pads. By August 2012 this tree looked pretty much as it looks now. Since then, I have been pruning it to keep the present shape. In October 2012, the tree was put in a bonsai pot. This month, I put it in a larger bonsai pot (shown on the photo). The height of the tree from apex to the rim of the pot is 175 mm. The tree will be completing its 18-month styling period next month. Needless to say, this tree requires further refinement, which I am hoping to document in this topic.

Hi Kigawa
You wont able to enter this tree in the "Create" section of the comp as you have wired and pruned this tree. You would be better to enter in into the refine section of the comp.

PS the pic has not come up in your post. you may need to re-attach it.

The refine category was only for trees already entered in last years comp - has this changed?

Hi Kigawa,
Doesnt stop you doing a progression anyway!! :tu: :tu:
Mo is right. Keep going with the development of the tree. I'm sure you will learn a lot from doing this. Post a photo of the progression every now and then. Without a doubt you will get some advice, ideas etc. :) What you learn from this exercise will put you in good stead for the next competition. I'm sure Steven will do another competition. :fc:
