The tree was potted into a larger pot. It has been ground and foliage fed, and let grow.

Species name = Baeckea Virgata Dwarf
Height = 320mm
Obtained = From nursery at Seven Hills (2009)
Cost = (Sorry I can't remember exactly) Most probably about $15

Hi all,
This is how the Baeckea looks today.
IMG_4945 -2.jpg
I started cutting back the foliage looking for the branches.
IMG_4947 -2.jpg
I have cut fairly hard, but, I needed to start and define where the pads are going to be.
IMG_4958 -2.jpg
I will leave the tree for a while now and see what back budding I can get.

Either you looked real hard under that foliage and picked a sweet trunk, or you are super lucky! Don't know if any of mine will be able to rival this!

Hi Karl,
Actually I hadn't looked to hard at the tree before deciding to enter it. It has been sitting around for a few years and I thought it was time to do something with it. I was very surprised and happy when I saw how much character the bark has. :)

Thanks Ken,
This is the first Baeckea I have had a go at, so looking forward to see how they respond.

He! It is almost done! Very very nice tree! I can dream only about this type of tree. No baeckea here.
I ask lots of questions that sound like suggestions. Please remember I am a inquisitive newbie trying to figure out why You made a particular decision, in order to learn.

Hi Neli,
Thank you. I understand how frustrating it must be for you. Not the same selection of trees we have, and, trying to learn without anyone else to help. I hope you will learn a lot from AusBonsai. When I was traveling around the world for my work I was able to visit Zambia.

Ray, Thank You! I just love your tree. Most of my rough material I bought in SA, India, Singapore ,UK...and lots of other countries. Started bonsai october last year only but I was collecting plants for my garden way before that. Meanwhile...there is almost no trees shrubs left in my garden. every day I dig out something... :palm:
How lovely that You were in Zambia. I am starting today on my first tree after drawing last night up to 01. Still have not decided on the style... :P

Hi Ray

Love the before and after for this lovely little tree! Great impact!

Will look forward to seeing the development of this one - you are already well on the way.

I hope you get advantageous backbudding. Do they back bud on old wood as a general rule?

Cheers

Stew

Hi Stew,
Thanks mate. I'm not sure about the back budding. This is the first Baeckea I have done. I am doing some research at present to find out more about them. I hope they do back bud well as I need more foliage in certain areas. :fc:

Hi Ray,

I have one similar, except a little larger. It was identified as a Baeckea originally. Since I have done a little more research have found it could be a sannantha pluriflora.

Regards,

Peter

You might see if you can get Pup to chime in, or maybe send him a PM. I've seen some pretty fantastic Baeckea from him. A few other nice ones floating around here too, but those are the ones that stick in my mind. I'm definitely getting some seeds for next year, these look like killer bonsai but I can't find them locally.
Cheers, Karl

Hi all,
Update on the Baeckea.

IMG_5479 -2.jpg
The foliage is coming back very nicely.
IMG_5476 -2.jpg
I am very pleased with how much back budding is occurring. It is happening on lots of the branches.
